Evaluations

Evaluations begin with an interview and formal assessment of speech(articulation) and/or language-(expressive (communication) and receptive(understanding), to establish a baseline.

Evaluations take at least one hour to complete. You will receive a written report with goals that highlight current areas to be addressed.

These goals are adapted as the client progresses.

Language

Language is segmented into two types: receptive (understanding) and expressive (communication). The foundation of our communication begins with understanding what we see in our environment. Children with a receptive language delay or disorder display a weakness with their ability to comprehend what is being asked of them, follow directions, and answer questions. This can impact their expressive language as they are unable to formulate the word knowledge to verbalize basic wants and needs. Receptive language can also impact a child’s written skills in later stages.

If you have questions about your child’s language please contact me via phone or email at ezspeakingtherapy@gmail.com to schedule an appointment.

Toddlers

Toddlers speech and language is integral in their growth and development. Children typically begin to understand what they see in their environment around three months, and say their first words around 12 months. By two years, a child should have around 50 words, following simple commands, and be around 50% intelligible to most listeners. By age 3, the early sounds begin to develop (referred to as m,n,w,h,p,b,t,d).

If you notice your child having difficulty putting together phrases, following directions, or having trouble with early speech sounds please feel free to contact me via phone or email at ezspeakingtherapy@gmail.com to schedule an appointment.

Voice

Humans rely on their voices not only to make basic wants and needs known; but to convey our feelings, enhance our relationships with others and can make a difference in how we are perceived. A vocal disorder can develop from over abuse in the work profession leading to hoarse/breathy vocal quality or fatigue or from a medical diagnosis such as Parkinson’s Disease, Cancer, or Vocal Nodules wherein the vocal cord may become paralyzed.

If you have questions about voice treatment including therapy for vocal nodules, muscle tension dysphonia, and other diagnoses please contact me via phone or email at ezspeakingtherapy@gmail.com to schedule an appointment.

Pragmatics/Social Skills

In a world where first impressions are everything, having the ability to form social relationships is crucial. A pragmatics or social skills disorder manifests itself when a child is unable to interact appropriately with those in their environment due to the inability to understand certain social cues. Therapy focuses on identifying, understanding, and modeling various social scenarios through videos and real-life situations.

Speech-ArticuLation

Your child’s articulation is an important component not only in providing overall confidence when speaking, but also in their reading and writing. Speech is described as either phonological or articulation based. An example of a phonological disorder is the use of one sound for another in a word: for example- if the child says “tat” for “cat.” Phonological disorders are processes that occur at the phoneme level. An articulation disorder is considered dependent on developmental norms meaning that a child may have difficulty with their production of a sound/multiple sounds beyond when the sound should be developed. For reference: sounds are typically developed by age 7.

If you think your child has an articulation disorder/delay, please contact me via phone or email at ezspeakingtherapy@gmail.com to schedule an appointment.
